ABOUT US

The Kings Cross Community Garden is located in Lawrence Hargrave Reserve, above the Kings Cross carpark. The garden was established in 2018 with the backing of the City of Sydney and we acknowledge their ongoing support.

Our vision is to create:

‘A productive and welcoming urban garden which encourages the community to come together, learn and share their interest in food production, gardening and sustainability, and which coexists in harmony with others who use Lawrence Hargrave Reserve.’

Everyone is invited to use our public herb bed along the fence, and to drop off food scraps for composting in the bins provided. The rest of the garden is intended for members, who work cooperatively to plan, cultivate and harvest the garden’s produce.

Why join?

Members share in the garden's produce

Garden members are entitled to share in the garden’s produce and participate in all garden-related activities.

Membership of the garden is open to everyone, and involves paying a small annual fee. Our members come from diverse backgrounds, with various interests, abilities and skills. Some are not active gardeners but help in other ways. What we have in common is a love of our green oasis and a willingness to learn and share ideas.

Members can expect small quantities of fresh vegetable treats, grown for flavour and picked fresh as well as unusual tidbits that you won’t find in the shops. More than 60 varieties of plants are grown on organic principles.

Find out how to become a member.

Or drop in and visit us. You’ll usually find members in the garden on weekends – 8am-10am on Saturdays, or 4pm-6pm on Sundays (3pm-5pm in winter) – when we meet to work, plan and chat.

Even if you don’t want to join, you can still subscribe to our newsletter to stay in touch.

Garden management

The garden operates as an incorporated association, Kings Cross Community Garden Inc.

Our current Plan of Management sets out how we work together in realising our vision.

Garden structure

In response to a member survey in 2021, four special interest groups were established, each looking after a different area of the garden:

  • bush food garden – at the far end

  • kitchen garden – in the centre section, where the original garden was situated

  • rambling potager garden – in the front section closest to the street

  • tree tenderer group – overseeing the concrete pipe planters.
